The 2025 legislative session of the Kentucky General Assembly is underway, and our agency remains committed to advocating for policies that improve the quality of care and quality of life for residents in long-term care facilities.
Senate Bill 27, sponsored by Senator Brandon Storm, seeks to establish the Kentucky
Parkinson’s Disease Research Registry, which will play a vital role in collecting data, advancing research, and informing policymakers on how best to address the needs of those living with Parkinson’s disease. This bill supports a stronger understanding of Parkinson’s disease.
House Bill 28, sponsored by Representative Derek Lewis, is another essential improvement for residents. This bill would require the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) to implement a one-hour dementia training and continuing education course for those employees or state contractors who are tasked with preventing elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. With dementia affecting so many residents in long-term care, this proposed legislation will help to promote best practices that lead to better resident experiences and outcomes.
House Bill 58, sponsored by Representative Lisa Willner, permits a tenant to terminate a lease or rental agreement if he or she is seeking relocation due to a recent mental or physical health emergency. In addition, the tenant will be relieved of costly rent or fees resulting from the termination. This proposed legislation is welcomed financial relief to Kentucky’s long-term care residents.
Our agency will continue to advocate for policies that protect and enhance the lives of long-term care residents. We encourage stakeholders and community members to join us in supporting residents to receive the dignity, respect, and quality of care they deserve.
